This video discusses the role that assistive technology can play in helping students with LDs remediate their reading skills as well as compensate for areas of weakness. Reading is a difficult task that does not come naturally to humans; it draws on many different cognitive processes at the same time including decoding words, understanding their meaning, creating mental pictures, making inferences and much more. Learning can be a difficult task for any student but especially for those with learning disabilities (LDs). Many of them have trouble identifying written words, which can lead to difficulties with other processes, like writing, spelling, and comprehension. In order to help students with LDs learn to read and/or compensate for weaker reading skills, schools across Ontario have adopted various forms of assistive technology or AT. In this video, educators and students discuss the ways in which AT can help students with LDs, with special emphasis on the program Read&Write for Google Chrome.
