Grade level: Junior, Intermediate and specific Senior grades (e.g., LD class, Special Education Classroom instruction)
Many educators view Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) as consultants, test administrators, or pull-out therapists who work 1-on-1 on articulation. The SLP’s advanced education and training in language development is critical to supporting individuals in the classroom who have language learning disabilities. What about in the math class? The curriculum is changing to help students understand math – not just “do” math. Unfortunately, the math curriculum is loaded with abstract and de-contextualized language. How can we build the capacity of our math learners when they also struggle with language and the often co-morbid deficits in executive functioning?
By the end of this webinar, participants will:
- Appreciate how a language learning disability impacts math learning
- Understand the impact executive functioning has on math learning
- Learn strategies to support students in a language-heavy math curriculum
About the presenter:
Sabrina O’Keefe is a Speech-Language Pathologist working in private practice in Dufferin and Peel. She graduated from the University of Toronto and has 17 years of experience working in the field, supporting children and their families. Sabrina spent two years on contract at Trillium Demonstration School, a Ministry of Education initiative for students in Grades 7 to 11 with severe learning disabilities; where she collaborated with teachers to integrate speech and language goals in the classroom.
