About the video:

Tier 1 and Tier 2 Explicit Instruction | Grade 4 highlights how structured, explicit literacy instruction supports student learning in a Grade 4 classroom.

In this classroom example from Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, explicit teaching is used to clearly explain why language works the way it does, including instruction in verb forms, prefixes, suffixes, and morphology. Foundational concepts are taught to the whole class through Tier 1 instruction, supported by modelling, guided practice, and ongoing classroom check-ins.

The video also demonstrates how Tier 2 small-group intervention is provided for students who require additional support, particularly in decoding and phonological skills. Through strategies such as sound boxes, targeted practice, and front-loading of upcoming content, students receive the additional instruction needed to strengthen foundational literacy skills.

This example illustrates how intentional, systematic instruction and tiered supports can build strong reading foundations while allowing educators to slow down and meet students where they are.
