The power of active processing lives within the scaffolds that educators “Coach” to guide students in Kindergarten to become independent learners. Based on the work of Zaretta Hammond, Culturally Responsive Teaching and The Brain, a brain-savvy educator connects thinking dispositions to emergent literacy skills. Coaching students through cognitive routines in order to create habits of mind. When planning, ask yourself, “why this learning, for this student, at this time, in this way?” to create culturally responsive opportunities that are within their zone of proximal development. As co-learners we honour student voice and ownership through inquiry play-based experiences. This session will provide educators with a toolkit of micro-videos that provoke mind-shift in culturally responsive teaching.
